Food in Health Security: bringing the food and health systems together as a FIHS Network-in-partnership for sustainability in the Asia Pacific Region and beyond

Mark L Wahlqvist Editor-in-Chief APJCN and Co-Convenor FIHS Network

Food security should be at the top of the global health agenda and the support for this is growing. This is because of the concurrence of several crises, financial, energy, water, climate change and of a food system itself with a trajectory of less and less affordability and sustainability. This comes at a time, though, of unprecedented advances in food and health science and technology and of bids for economic systems which reckon with human development and an ecologically viable planet. In August 2009, the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan in conjunction with the World Vegetable Research Centre convened an Asia Pacific roundtable on Food in Health Security with the support of the Australian Academies Science and of Technology Science and Engineering, the National Science Council of Taiwan, Academia Sinica, the International Science Council and others. Out of this has developed a FIHS network which seeks to be in partnership with like-minded organisations. The papers which constitute a platform for the network have been published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition and are freely available on the Journal web-site.
