Launch: First global initiative to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fats

Monday 14 May 2018 from 13.45-14.30 CET

WHO is launching a first-ever global initiative to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the global food supply.

Eliminating industrially-produced trans-fats from food production and people’s diets will promote health and protect people from consuming these harmful products. Trans-fats intake is responsible for more than 500,000 premature deaths each year from cardiovascular disease – the world’s number one killer. Trans-fats clog arteries and have no known health benefit. They can easily be replaced in food with healthier alternatives at no extra cost.

The WHO initiative provides the tools for all countries to eliminate trans-fats from their food supply, thereby spreading the health benefits of elimination more equally around the world.

Speakers:
• Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO
• Dr Thomas Frieden, President & CEO, Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies
• Dr Francesco Branca, Director, Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, WHO
• Dr Svetlana Axelrod, Assistant Director-General, Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, WHO (moderator)
