COP16
The UNSCN and its constituents have played a major role in raising awareness on the impacts of climate change on food and nutrition security at the COP16 and on the need to address nutrition at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Ad hoc Working Group on Long Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA). The UNSCN participated at the Agriculture and Rural Development Day (ARDD) 2010 at the COP16 . The statement of the ARDD 2010 highlighted that "Action on food security, nutrition and hunger must be explicitly included in any post 2012 agreements especially within long term cooperative actions (AWG-LCA text)".The UNSCN also participated and made interventions in several health related events and met with more than 20 country delegations (the UNSCN Policy Brief on Climate Change and Nutrition was given to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the Health Minister of Mexico among others). Promising collaborative relationships have been established with key countries, with UN agencies, NGOs and academia. Particular support towards addressing nutrition at the AWG-LCA was shown by Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala (who chairs the G77), the African Commission Union and the African countries group. Among the UN system, FAO, WFP, and WHO have been key partners to address nutrition and health at the COP 16 in collaboration with NGOs such as Action Against Hunger.

COP17
The United Nations Climate Change Conference COP17 is held in Durban, South Africa from November 28th until December 9th of 2011. It brings together representatives of the world's governments, international organizations and civil society. The discussions will seek to advance the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the Bali Action Plan, agreed at COP 13 in 2007, and the Cancun Agreements, reached at COP 16 in December 2010.We are very pleased to inform that a side-event was held Sunday, 4th December 2011, 18.30hrs to 20.00hrs, called:
Nutrition and Climate Change-Making the Connection to Enhance Livelihood Resilience, Health and Women's Empowerment.
It was held at the African Pavilion of the African Union, the South African Government and the African Development Bank. It was facilitated by the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN), the Public Health Institute (PHI) and Action contre la Faim (ACF).
Climate change has a direct impact on undernutrition, one of the world's most serious but under-addressed socioeconomic and health problems. The current drought in the Horn of Africa that triggered famine in Somalia and spurred food crises in others countries is likely an indication of what may come as such incidents become more commonplace, with extreme weather events having a higher probability of occurring as a result of climate change. Despite this, nutrition is largely missing in the climate change negotiations. Therefore, this side event aimed to demonstrate why nutrition must represent a key pillar of climate-resilient development and to highlight how nutrition, food security, health, social protection and women empowerment approaches can be integrated to build climate resilience.

Click here to see the event's background paper: "Enhancing women's leadership to address the challenges of climate change on nutrition security and health".
We would be most grateful if you could further disseminate the background paper through your own networks. We need to ensure that nutrition will be discussed at the COP! Help us in sensitizing, raising awareness, advertising and lobbying for nutrition to be a key pillar of climate-resilient development!
The side-event was a success and a short report will be soon available.
