Second Report on the World Nutrition Situation - Volume II: Country Trends Methods and Statistics

UN Standing Committee on Nutrition

Published in : 1993

Available in : English

Country-level data are intended to illustrate and promote understanding of observed trends in nutrition. They also, importantly, show the variety of situations, smoothed out in the regional data, from rapid improvement to stagnation or deterioration. As discussed in the text, the choice of countries was biased towards those with large populations. This means that the 14 countries together with China (as given in Volume I) include about 70% of the population of the developing countries, and some 85% of the underweight children. Certain other countries were chosen as having relatively improving situations, on the basis that more can be learned from success: seeing how it was that, say, Thailand achieved such improvement, is probably more informative than detailed analysis of why somewhere else failed to improve.
