Sustainable development goals

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development “...to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path”. To implement that ambition, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force in January 2016. The Agenda serves as a collective guide for all countries to promote human health, well-being and prosperity while safeguarding the planet.

The SDGs are profoundly transformative, cutting across technical sectors and providing a united vision for all nations. They encourage synergies between the individual actors and goals, which are by their nature, interconnected and indivisible. Good nutrition lies at the heart of these synergies and acts as a catalyst for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda as a whole. For example, diets (SDG 2) are the tie that binds environmental sustainability and human health and well-being (SDG 3). They can improve nutritional outcomes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions (SDG 13), and preserving marine life (SDG 14) and livestock (SDG 15). Diets are also linked to responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) by cities and communities (SDG 11) through sustainable food systems; partnerships across all sectors and stakeholder groups (SDG 17) are needed to mobilize action accordingly. When a community is properly nourished, it is able to reach its full developmental (SDG 4) and economic (SDG 8) potential, which helps to reduce poverty (SDG 1) and, when properly targeted, reduce inequalities (SDG 10) and ensure that no one is left behind. As a result, the transformational change called for by the 2030 Agenda can only be achieved by comprehensive and coherent shifts in actions, programmes and policies addressing both underlying and immediate causes of malnutrition.
