We hear it over and over. It seems as though every new report released, every article published and every speech delivered decries the fact that a generation of development gains is being wiped out by the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. This troubling reality is nowhere more evident than in parts of sub- Saharan Africa where the impact of the epidemic dwarfs the limited reach of valiant local efforts to thwart it. Even without HIV and AIDS, the health, education and nutrition-related problems faced by most children living in the region are enormous and the solutions complicated enough to have stymied cadres of experts for decades. When these problems are combined with the ravaging effects of HIV and AIDS, there can be dire consequences for families, communities and even entire nations.
